State Excise Department conducts special campaign against illegal liquor sale and consumption

Pune: After a special campaign conducted by the State Excise Department‘s Pune office against illegal liquor sellers and consumers consuming liquor in prohibited places between January 7 and 9, a total 28 crimes have been registered under Sections 68 and 84 of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act, 1949.

The accused arrested were produced in the court, 25 have been convicted and a fine of ₹37,000 has been imposed on them. 

Apart from this, the State Excise Pune Department has submitted a proposal to the competent authorities to collect good behavior bonds from the accused in the current year to deter them from redoing the act while also helping in , eradicating illegal liquor manufacturing, transportation and sale. 

Also, a total of 17 proposals for action under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act (MPDA) and 2 proposals under Maharashtra Control Of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) have been given to the concerned authorities. A total of 10 departmental cases have been registered against the licensee of liquor shop and country liquor bar selling liquor at a higher rate.

In a similar campaign between September 2022 and December 31, 2022, a total of 35 such crimes were reported. A total of 71 accused have been found guilty by the court and fined ₹1,27,800.

State Excise Superintendent Charan Singh Rajput informed that the number of crimes reported in 2022-23 has increased by 435 over the year 2021-22. The number of accused getting arrested has increased by 596 and seized vehicles and goods by 72 and 5,86,40,662 respectively. 

And the officer has also appealed to citizens to report if they found any illegal liquor production, transportation and sale to toll free number 18002339999 and telephone number 020-26058633.
