As Makar Sankranti approaches, there is a growing demand for eco-friendly, recycled, upcycled, and organic products. Many consumers are looking for ways to celebrate the festival while reducing their impact on the environment.

One popular trend is the use of recycled and upcycled materials in the production of traditional festival items such as kites, rangolis, and decorations. These eco-friendly alternatives not only reduce waste but also support local artisans and small businesses.

There is an increased demand for organic products such as organic amla candy, tamarind and date candy mixed dry fruit bites.  These are made with natural ingredients and without the use of harmful pesticides, making them a healthier option.

Many communities and organizations are also promoting the use of sustainable practices during Makar Sankranti such as using LED lights, avoiding the use of plastic, and promoting the use of natural colours.

“Organic products and upcycled materials are a boon. We should exchange gifts which are made of these products. Awareness about this should increase,” said Sunanda Mhatre, an enthusiastic shopper.

“We witnessed the demand for upcycled materials in this season. People are asking for it. We sell products like terracotta water jugs, earthen pots for easy cooking, cloth bags used with repurposed fabrics, soaps, and deodorants. We also make jewellery from fabrics, ” said Jeevan Timbe, Earthing Shop, Ravivarpeth.

Pune Pulse requests you to celebrate Makar Sankranti in an eco-friendly way by choosing sustainable and organic products, supporting local artisans and communities, and reducing our impact on the environment.
