State Protection Granted to Holkar Chhatri and Mahadev Temple, Honoring Pune’s Maratha Legacy
The Maharashtra government has made an important move to safeguard Pune’s cultural heritage by designating the Holkar Chhatri and Mahadev Temple in Khadki as state-protected monuments. This decision was formalized through a government resolution issued by the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs.
Historical Significance
Located by the Mula River in the Khadki Cantonment Board area, the Holkar Chhatri is a significant structure linked to the Holkar dynasty of the Maratha Empire. The site comprises two memorials and a Mahadev temple, all managed by the Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Charities Trust from Indore.
Both the Chhatri and the temple are recognized for their 18th-century Maratha-style architecture, featuring a fortified structure and a temple spire that reflect traditional craftsmanship.
The state government has finalized the steps to officially recognize the Holkar Chhatri and Mahadev Temple as state-protected monuments. A draft notification in both English and Marathi is set to be published in Part 4 of the state gazette, and the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums has been tasked with displaying the notification at key locations near the monument.
Cultural and Architectural Importance
Situated close to the famous Holkar Bridge, the site includes a stone ghat along the riverbank, which adds to its historical and architectural value. By designating the Holkar Chhatri as a state-protected monument, efforts for its preservation are likely to increase, drawing more attention to Pune’s vibrant heritage.
