Pune, June 5, 2026: The Yerwada Police have taken a juvenile into custody for allegedly stealing bicycles from various locations in the Maharashtra Housing Board and Nagpur Chawl areas of Pune. Police recovered 15 stolen bicycles worth approximately ₹1 lakh from the minor.

According to the police, several complaints regarding bicycle thefts had been received from residents in the area. During the investigation, CCTV footage indicated that a young boy was involved in the thefts. Senior officers subsequently directed the local police to take immediate action.

Acting on a tip-off received through an informer, members of the Yerawada Police Station detection team learned that the juvenile suspected of committing the thefts was residing with his grandmother in New Khadki, Yerawada.

Police contacted the child’s guardians and questioned him in the presence of family members. During the inquiry, the juvenile reportedly admitted to stealing bicycles. He told investigators that his mother had passed away, while his father and grandfather were currently in jail in connection with a serious criminal case. With no one available to adequately support him, he allegedly resorted to theft to obtain money for personal expenses and entertainment.

Investigators found that the juvenile would survey neighbourhoods during the day to identify unattended bicycles. He would then return at night and steal the cycles when no one was around.

Following his confession, police recovered a total of 15 stolen bicycles valued at around ₹1,00,000.

The operation was carried out under the guidance of Additional Commissioner of Police (Eastern Region) Manoj Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 4) Rajnikant Chilumula, and Assistant Commissioner of Police (Yerawada Division) Sunil Jaitapurkar. The investigation was supervised by Senior Police Inspector Anjum Bagwan and Police Inspector (Crime) Kailas Daberav.
