Pune: With the number of Auto rickshaws rising in the city, the Pune Regional Transport Office has sent a proposal to the state government to ask them to stop issuing permits in the city. The total number of auto-rickshaw permits before 2017 was 43000, now it is 82,523.

“We have sent a proposal to the state government in this regard, as number of auto-rickshaws is sufficient for the city’s population. Once the approval comesfrom the government, we will stop giving auto-rickshaw permits,” said Ajit Shinde, Pune Regional Transport Officer.

Looking at the increasing population in 2017, Pune RTO started issuing permits to new consumers. In six years, 36511 new permits have been allotted by the Pune RTO.

“At every chowk, you will find the number of auto-rickshaws has increased, which has taken a toll on the income. Many times from morning to afternoon you only get one customer,” said Navnath Gaikwad, an auto driver.
