Learn the best time and method to water plants during summer. Experts suggest early morning watering to prevent heat damage and keep plants healthy.

April 27, 2026:
With rising temperatures across India, summer heat is not only affecting people but also taking a toll on plants. Gardening experts advise that proper timing and method of watering are crucial to keep plants healthy during extreme heat.

Many people tend to water plants whenever they appear wilted, but experts warn that incorrect timing can do more harm than good. The ideal time to water plants is early morning, preferably before 8 AM. During this time, cooler temperatures allow water to seep deep into the soil and reach the roots effectively. It also helps leaves dry naturally as the day progresses, reducing the risk of fungal infections.

Evening watering can also be done, but with caution. Experts recommend watering only after sunset when the soil has cooled down. It is important to avoid wetting the leaves at night, as moisture can remain trapped and lead to plant diseases, especially in areas with poor air circulation.

However, watering plants during midday should be strictly avoided. High temperatures cause water to evaporate quickly, preventing proper absorption. In some cases, water droplets on leaves can act like a magnifying lens, intensifying sunlight and causing leaf burn.

For effective plant care, watering should always be done at the base to ensure moisture reaches the roots. Gardeners are also advised to check soil moisture before watering—plants should only be watered if the top two inches of soil are dry. Overwatering can lead to root rot and damage plant health.

Experts also suggest using mulching techniques such as dry leaves or coconut fibre to retain soil moisture and reduce the frequency of watering.

Overall, maintaining a balance is key. Proper timing, controlled watering, and simple care techniques can help plants survive and thrive even during peak summer conditions.
