Mumbai, January 31, 2026: After the untimely demise of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, discussions were underway about who would take over the vacant post. Amid these speculations, a major political development has now come to light.
According to sources, Ajit Pawar’s wife, Sunetra Pawar, is set to take the oath as Deputy Chief Minister on January 31 at 5:00 PM. If confirmed, she will become the first woman Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. This announcement has sparked significant political attention across the state.
In response to these developments, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis shared his views with the media.
What Did CM Devendra Fadnavis Say?
Addressing questions about Sunetra Pawar’s possible appointment, Fadnavis stated that the decision rests entirely with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
“Any decision regarding the post of Deputy Chief Minister will be taken by the NCP. As a government and as the BJP, we will firmly support whatever decision they make. Whether it concerns Ajit Pawar’s family or the party itself, we stand fully with them. They will receive our complete support in whatever choice they arrive at,” he said.
Were There Discussions With the NCP?
The Chief Minister confirmed that NCP leaders had met him on two occasions. During these meetings, they discussed the party’s internal decision-making process and possible options. However, he clarified that the final decision will be taken by the NCP leadership, and he does not have further details at this stage.
Who Will Present the State Budget?
Responding to questions about the upcoming state budget, Fadnavis said that Ajit Pawar had already done extensive groundwork for it.
“From tomorrow, I will personally oversee the remaining budget preparations and ensure the process is completed smoothly. A decision on who will present the budget will be taken thereafter,” he added.
