A Dehradun-based engineer, Akshay Saini, has stirred up discussions on the internet with his candid remarks on salary and job switching.

In a post that has been gaining traction, Saini shared what he described as ‘hard truths’ about achieving high salaries in the engineering field.

Saini bluntly stated, “If you’re underpaid, it’s your fault,” and emphasized that switching jobs is often the most effective way to attain higher salaries. He expressed skepticism about internal appraisals in many Indian companies, referring to them as a ‘joke,’ and suggested that those who feel undervalued should not hesitate to seek new opportunities.

Highlighting the importance of job transitions for salary growth, Saini advised individuals, especially software engineers, to consider changing companies to achieve higher earnings. He asserted that switching jobs frequently can lead to substantial salary hikes, particularly for those who began with lower initial salaries.

Criticizing the effectiveness of internal appraisals and promotions, Saini indicated that they often result in minimal salary increases and are fraught with inefficiencies.

In conclusion, Saini cautioned against complacency and urged individuals to prioritize their financial well-being by actively seeking better opportunities.

He suggested that job switching should be considered if one genuinely feels undervalued, asserting that “greed has no cure.”

Saini’s remarks have sparked a debate online, with many individuals weighing in on the merits and challenges of his perspective.

“True. I switched jobs in 6 months. Reached 6.5LPA . Now switching again after 45 days. Expecting 9.6LPA.God has been gracious”.

“Hello sir, I have been working for a product-based company for five years. My salary hike for the last five years is given below. Nov 2018- Mar-2020: 12% Mar-2021: 14% Mar-2022: 15% Mar-2023: 22% Mar-2024: 32%. Should I switch my company?” asked another.

A third reiterated Saini’s message, “Salary is as important as good work.”

“At least every 2 years, you should get interviewed and get an offer; this will help you to understand yourself and your skills demand at the current rate and ask your existing org to match. If they do, works for both,” suggested a fourth

The post has prompted reflection on prevailing salary structures and career advancement strategies within the engineering community.
