Symbiosis Law School holds Regional Consultation on “Review of Criminal Law- Improvement in Status of Women”
Symbiosis Law School, Pune, a constituent of Symbiosis International (Deemed University) is hosting a “Regional Consultation on Review of Criminal Law- Improvement in Status of Women” in collaboration with the National Commission for Women, New Delhi on their special invitation in the western region. The event will take place on 16 February, 2022 from 10 AM to 4 PM.
The event shall be graced with the august presence of Dr. S. B. Mujumdar, Chancellor, Symbiosis International (Deemed University) Dr. Vidya Yeravdekar, Pro- Chancellor, Symbiosis International (Deemed University), Dr. Rajani Gupte, Vice Chancellor, Symbiosis International (Deemed University) and Dr. Shashikala Gurpur, Fulbright Scholar, Director, SLS-P, Dean, Faculty of Law, Jean Monnet Chair Professor in EU Climate Justice Law, Governance, Management.
The event will be the third edition in a series of five Regional Consultations on Review of Criminal Law- Improvement in Status of Women, which were held previously on 18 January 2022 and 22nd January 2022. Regional Consultations are conducted with the objective of reviewing and analyzing the position of law which will eventually culminate into a concluding consultation on the topic of Criminal Law and Improving the Status of Women.
Through its preceding editions, the Commission has identified and analysed legislative gaps and has proposed amendments to rectify the same. Laws relating to cyber-crime, dowry death and marital rape have been placed under the lens in previous consultations. The present regional consultation aims to critically analyse legislations revolving around sexual offences including marital rape, cybercrimes, offences relating to marriage, cruelty by husband and his relatives, procedural law and orders for maintenance of wives, children and parents pertinent issues include standard of consent, viability of gender-neutral terms when defining sexual offences, factors that influence sentencing and more.
The event will take place across two parallel plenary sessions. The first plenary session will be on the theme of “Review of Criminal Law- Improvement in Status of Women: Cyber Crime and IPC (Sexual Offenses)” which shall see deliberation and engagement from galaxy of eminent resource persons such as Prof. Dr. K. V. S. Sarma, Vice- Chancellor, MNLU, Aurangabad, Dr. Rashmi Oza, Principal, Chembur Karnataka College of Law, Dr. K I Vibhute, Director, Amity Law School, Mumbai, Adv. Puneet Bhasin, Cyber Law & Cyber Crime Experts, Poornima Gaikwad, Deputy Commissioner of Pune and SK Jain, Criminal Law Advocate, Pune. The second plenary would be based on the topic “Improving status of Women: Discussion on Law Relating to Dowry Death, IPC, Cr.P.C and IEA related on Marriage and Family related offenses.” It shall be graced by esteemed resource persons such as Adv. Uday Warunjekar, Dr. Sanjay Jain, Principal (Additional Charge) ILS Law College, Pune, Dr. Purvi Pokhriyal, Dean, National Forensic Science University, Gujrat, Dr. Rajeshri Varhadi, Professor & Head, Department of Law, University of Mumbai, Mrs. Geeta Kulkarni Sevavardhini, Prof. Dr. K. V. S. Sarma, Vice Chancellor, Maharashtra National Law University, Aurangabad, SK Jain, Criminal Law Advocate, Pune, Justice. Ambadas Joshi, Lokayukt, Goa, Pratap Sawant, Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, and Prof. Renjith Thomas, Executive Director Child Rights Advocacy, NLU Jodhpur. In all 28 resource persons and above 1000 online/offline attendees are expected. It also includes participation of social activists, members of civil society organisations and NGOs such as Dhoop-We Carry Hope, Saheli, Maher, Childline, and Sevavardhini.
After the Regional Consultation a detailed report on the outcome and recommendations will be prepared and sent to the National Commission for Women, New Delhi by SLS, Pune.
