“We are deeply anguished by the tragic event involving Air India Flight 171. No words can adequately express the grief we feel at this moment,” Chandrasekaran said in a statement shared on Tata Group’s official handle on X (formerly Twitter). “Tata Group will provide ₹1 crore to the families of each person who has lost their life in this tragedy.”
In addition to the compensation, the group has pledged to bear the full medical expenses of all those injured in the crash. The company will also extend support towards rebuilding the doctors’ hostel at BJ Medical College, which was severely damaged in the accident. The aircraft had crashed into the hostel building while medical students were having lunch in the mess, triggering panic and casualties among residents.
“We will provide support in the rebuilding of BJ Medical College’s hostel and remain steadfast in standing with the affected families and communities during this unimaginable time,” the statement added.
According to the FAIMA Doctors Association, the wife of a resident doctor was among the deceased, while several MBBS students and relatives of resident doctors remain missing. Two to three students are currently in intensive care, and about 50 others who were hospitalised are reported to be in stable condition.
The Tata Group, which owns Air India, has reiterated its commitment to assist the victims’ families and aid the affected community during this difficult period.
