Tata Motors Breaks Ground for New Car Plant in Tamil Nadu
The new facility will produce Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover cars for Indian and global markets.
Tata Motors Ltd. has officially started construction on its new manufacturing plant in Panapakkam, Ranipet district, Tamil Nadu. The greenfield project, costing Rs 9,000 crore, is designed to operate solely on renewable energy and will have an annual production capacity of 2,50,000 units, catering to both Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover cars.
The facility is expected to create 5,000 new jobs and further solidify Tamil Nadu’s status as an automotive hub, which already hosts the local manufacturing operations of major companies like Hyundai, BMW, Renault-Nissan and Citroen, as well as Indian two-wheeler makers such as Royal Enfield, TVS Motor, Ola Electric and Ather Energy.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin laid the foundation stone for the plant, accompanied by senior ministers Durai Murugan and TRB Rajaa, Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam and Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran. During the ceremony, Stalin highlighted Tamil Nadu’s appeal as a prime investment destination for both domestic and multinational corporations, expressing pride in Chandrasekaran’s leadership at Tata Sons.
This project follows a memorandum of understanding signed between Tata Motors and the Tamil Nadu government in March, aiming to boost the state’s automotive sector and employment opportunities.
