Pimpri-Chinchwad: A total of ₹180 crore in pending property tax is owed by 77,886 flat owners across 6,644 registered housing societies under the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). In response, the civic body has decided to mark the unpaid tax amount on defaulters’ share certificates. A letter regarding this action has been sent to the respective society presidents.

The municipal tax collection department has been tasked with recovering ₹1,000 crore in property tax for the current financial year. Despite measures such as cutting off water connections and sealing properties, many defaulters have not cleared their dues. PCMC has been sending repeated mobile notifications and directly contacting flat owners, while also sharing a list of defaulters with society presidents and secretaries and displaying notices on society boards. Since these efforts have not yielded the desired results, the civic body has now decided to impose the outstanding tax amount on defaulters’ share certificates.

Impact on Property Transfers

Housing societies issue share certificates to flat owners, with a copy maintained by society officials. PCMC has requested that society officials record pending property tax amounts on these certificates. Additionally, a formal communication will be sent to the Cooperative Housing Society Registrar. This move ensures that no-objection certificates (NOCs) for property transfers will only be issued after pending taxes are cleared, preventing potential fraud during property transactions.

Defaulters Barred from Society Elections

The PCMC has also informed the registrar that defaulters will be disqualified from voting in society elections and from contesting for society board positions. Letters regarding this decision have been sent to society presidents.

Appeal To Update Mobile Numbers

PCMC has urged flat owners to pay their pending property tax for the current or previous financial years and ensure that their registered mobile numbers are updated with the tax collection department. With only 14 days left in the financial year, Additional Commissioner Pradeep Jambhale-Patil has appealed to defaulters to clear their dues by March 31.
