TCS Pune Sees Surge in Layoffs; 365 Employees Let Go, Complaints Filed With Labour Commissioner
TCS Announces Salary Hikes Across All Grades Effective April 1
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has recently intensified its workforce reductions, with its Pune office seeing a significant impact. Reports indicate that 365 employees have been laid off over the past few days, adding to the thousands already affected this year. Pune Mirror reports that the layoffs were abrupt, leaving many employees shocked and distressed. Several affected individuals have approached the Labour Commissioner, requesting reinstatement and proper redress. Hearings regarding these complaints are currently in progress.
The ongoing job cuts are reportedly linked to global economic slowdown and increasing protectionism in Western countries. Once thriving on globalization, Indian IT firms like TCS are now facing setbacks as international markets tighten regulations and prioritize domestic employment.
Employees claim that the company did not follow proper layoff procedures and failed to provide adequate compensation. Disturbingly, some female employees stated that they were pressured to resign while on maternity leave, raising serious concerns about the company’s adherence to labour laws.
During a hearing in November, the Labour Commissioner summoned TCS’s HR head to explain the situation. Instead of providing immediate clarity, the HR head promised to submit a written response later, leaving many employees unsettled. The IT sector, which once offered stable employment and attractive salaries, is now confronting recession-like challenges. TCS, repeatedly in the spotlight for large-scale layoffs and alleged labour violations, exemplifies the struggles facing the industry.
Pune Mirror also shared several alarming individual cases an employee terminated on the very first day of joining, a Mumbai worker forced to resign while on emergency medical leave, and a Pune-based divorced woman—recognized as an “overachiever”—asked to leave despite excellent performance.
