Employee says no appraisal discussion took place; netizens speculate on underpayment, workload and business needs

A sudden 100 per cent salary hike would normally be cause for celebration. But for one Indian tech professional, the unexpected raise brought confusion instead of excitement.

The employee shared the experience on Reddit, explaining that she received a 100 per cent pay increase without asking for it or having any appraisal discussion.

According to the post, she had been working hard on a project when upper management held internal discussions. Her manager later spoke to her, asking how she was feeling about work pressure and related issues. She responded honestly and explained her situation.

A few days later, while updating her manager during a daily stand-up, she was told that her salary had been increased. She said she had not brought up any salary negotiations or performance review discussions.

“I am completely clueless about the reason behind this decision,” the Redditor wrote.

Why The Hike Felt Unsettling

The employee works at a small company with only a handful of staff. She mentioned that none of her batchmates received a raise. The firm largely depends on outsourced projects and client assignments and is currently experiencing a slowdown in work.

Given the company’s situation, the sudden hike left her both surprised and slightly worried.

Instead of celebrating, she found herself wondering what prompted the move.

Netizens Share Theories

The post quickly gained traction online, with users offering multiple explanations.

One user suggested she may have been “drastically underpaid” earlier and that management realised she was a key resource.

Another commenter shared a personal experience, saying their salary once tripled within six months after management recognised their ability to handle multiple responsibilities. However, the hike was followed by a sharp increase in workload, leading to burnout.

“I hope this does not happen to OP,” the user added.

A third person took a practical view, stating that companies usually grant raises based on business needs rather than merit alone. According to them, such decisions often reflect how essential an employee is at a particular time.

Another user commented, “There is no such thing as a free lunch. Either you earned it, or you are going to learn why they gave you that hike soon.”

Others, however, described her as fortunate and said unexpected hikes are rare. They suggested the decision could reflect supportive leadership or internal strategic considerations not visible to employees.

Celebration Or Caution?

While most employees struggle for even a 10 per cent annual appraisal, this case highlights how an unusually large hike can raise questions about expectations, workload and future responsibilities.

For now, the techie remains both grateful and cautious — a reminder that in the corporate world, even good news can come with uncertainty.
