Tension gripped Thergaon on Sunday night after the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) demolished an illegal hall built near a madrasa in Pawar nagar, Kalewadi-Thergaon. The 120 sq meter RCC structure was torn down in the early hours of Monday, with the assistance of JCB machines and anti-encroachment staff.

Around 2,500 police personnel were deployed at the site to maintain order, and all roads leading to the area were cordoned off, restricting entry to local residents only. By Monday afternoon, the situation had normalized, according to officials.

A senior PCMC official clarified that no action was taken against the mosque or madrasa itself, as some leaders had alleged. “The demolished structure was a hall recently built by the trustee of the educational institute. Despite multiple notices to stop the illegal construction, no action was taken, leading to the demolition,” the official stated.

The trustee of the madrasa claimed the land was owned by them and had been in use since 2002. He further stated that after receiving notices, they requested ways to legalize the structure but received no response from PCMC before the sudden demolition.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandip Doifode confirmed that the situation remained under control, with no law-and-order issues reported.
