Testing To Begin In Two Days; Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link Set For Inauguration On May 1?
The final phase of Maharashtra’s major expressway upgrade is underway, with the new route expected to save around 30 minutes of travel time.
The long-awaited Missing Link project on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway has entered its final stretch, with officials stating that the work is expected to be completed by April 30. Authorities have also announced that load testing on the new route will begin within the next two days.
The 13.3-km Missing Link has been developed between Khopoli and Kusgaon to bypass the busy and risky ghat section of the expressway. The new alignment has been designed to reduce congestion, improve safety and make travel faster for commuters moving between Mumbai and Pune.
Officials said major construction has already been completed and only finishing works, final road surfacing and safety checks are now pending. Asphalting work is in its last stage, after which load testing of the route will be carried out before the road is opened to the public.
Once operational, the Missing Link is expected to reduce travel time on the Mumbai-Pune route by nearly 30 minutes. It will also help motorists avoid the steep curves, accident-prone slopes and traffic bottlenecks in the Khandala ghat section.
The project includes advanced infrastructure such as long tunnels, high bridges and viaduct sections built through difficult hilly terrain. It is considered one of the most ambitious road engineering works undertaken in Maharashtra in recent years.
Authorities said the route may be opened in May after receiving final approval for inauguration. However, if approvals are delayed, the launch could happen later in the month. Officials added that the road will be opened only after all safety standards and technical inspections are successfully completed.
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, opened in 2002, currently handles over 70,000 vehicles daily and remains one of the busiest highways in the state. With rising traffic volumes every year, the Missing Link is expected to provide major relief to regular travellers and transporters.
Once launched, commuters can expect a smoother, safer and quicker journey between Mumbai and Pune, especially during weekends and holiday rush periods.
