Indian Railways has the world’s fourth-largest rail network, with numerous trains operating daily to help millions of travelers reach their destinations. They offer a diverse range of services, including express trains like the Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, and Vande Bharat Express, along with mail express, passenger trains, and local DMU coaches, catering to crores of travelers throughout the year.

While Indian Railways generates revenue from freight transport, the majority of its income comes from ticket sales. Interestingly, these tickets are sold to passengers at a 46 percent discount, and the national transporter provides a substantial subsidy of Rs 56,993 crore annually to all passenger categories.

When it comes to the highest-earning train for Indian Railways, it is not the new Vande Bharat or the Shatabdi Express; rather, the title goes to the Rajdhani Express, recognized as the most profitable train for the Northern Railway.

As per the data from Indian Railways, the 22692 KSR Bengaluru Rajdhani Express, which operates between Hazrat Nizamuddin in Delhi and KSR Bengaluru City Junction, is the highest revenue-generating train. In the financial year 2022-23, it earned Rs 1,76,06,66,339, with 509,510 passengers traveling on it during that time.

India’s highest-earning trains include several notable services. The Sealdah Rajdhani Express, which operates between New Delhi and Kolkata, generated revenue of Rs 1,28,81,69,274 in the fiscal year 2022-23, transporting 509,164 passengers.

The Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express, connecting New Delhi and Dibrugarh in Assam, ranks as the third most profitable train, earning Rs 1,26,29,09,697 and carrying 474,605 passengers in the same fiscal year.

In fourth place is the Mumbai Tejas Rajdhani Express, which served over 485,794 passengers traveling between New Delhi and Mumbai Central, earning Rs 122 crore during the 2022-23 period.

While modern trains like the Vande Bharat have enhanced India’s rail infrastructure, traditional services like the Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express remain essential to the operations of Indian Railways.
