This Popular Sedan of Maruti Is Being Discontinued – Find Out Why!
The Maruti Ciaz, a popular mid-segment sedan, is facing an uncertain future. While it was once a strong contender in the market, its sales have been steadily declining in recent years, particularly with the rise of the SUV segment. This decline, coupled with other factors, has led to speculation about the car’s discontinuation. Reports suggest that production of the Maruti Ciaz is expected to halt permanently by March 2025, with the model officially discontinued by April 2025.
While there is no official confirmation from Maruti Suzuki, the decision to discontinue the Ciaz is likely driven by a combination of factors, including dwindling sales, changing market preferences, and the company’s focus on other segments like SUVs. It remains to be seen whether the Maruti Ciaz will make a comeback in the future, perhaps with a new name or a significant update.
Why is the Maruti Ciaz set to be discontinued?
The Maruti Ciaz, launched in 2014, hasn’t had a major makeover since a mid-life refresh in 2018. While it was a pioneer in India for using the next-generation Smart Hybrid technology with a Lithium-Ion battery, it seems Maruti Suzuki hasn’t kept the Ciaz up-to-date with the latest trends in features, safety, styling, or engine technology.

The rise of SUVs and competition from other carmakers offering trendy features has made it tough for sedans to stay popular. While some sedans like the VW Virtus, Honda City, and Maruti Suzuki Dzire are still in the game, overall, sedans are losing ground. Reports show that sedans only made up about 10% of the Indian car market in 2024, compared to 20% back in 2015.
Departure of the Maruti Ciaz diesel from the market impacted sales figures
The removal of the 1.5 DDiS diesel engine during the Ciaz’s mid-life facelift also played a big role in its declining sales. Diesel engines were popular with Ciaz buyers, accounting for about 30% of sales. When Maruti Suzuki removed the diesel option to meet BS6 emission standards, they didn’t replace it with anything new. This left the Ciaz with only a 1.5-liter petrol engine option, which didn’t appeal to everyone.
A review of Maruti Ciaz sales throughout the years

The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz’s sales have been steadily declining. In 2024, sales were in the triple digits. Looking back, 2023 saw some months with higher sales, like April (1,017 units), June (1,744 units), July (1,348 units), and September (1,491 units). However, those numbers are still lower than the 2022 peak, which was 2,515 units in August. Even in 2021, the Ciaz sold more, with 3,001 units sold in August.
Price of the Maruti Ciaz:
Right now, the only Maruti Ciaz models you can buy are the Sigma and Delta. They start at Rs 9.41 lakh and go up to Rs 11.11 lakh. If Maruti Suzuki decides to stop making the Ciaz, any cars left at dealerships might be sold at a big discount. But it’s true that other cars in the same price range are now better options.
Engine and mileage of the Maruti Ciaz:
The Maruti Ciaz uses a K15 Smart Hybrid Petrol Engine that generates 104.6 PS of power and 138 Nm of torque. You can choose between a 4-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. The manual version gets a claimed fuel efficiency of 20.65 km/l, while the automatic version is rated at 20.04 km/l.
