Traffic Violation Turns Violent: Couple Attacks Female Traffic Officer in Pune
A couple has been accused of assaulting a female traffic police officer in Chinchwad, Pune, following a traffic violation on Saturday afternoon. The incident took place on Link Road while the officer was carrying out her regular duties.
The Pimpri Chinchwad police apprehended two individuals: Milind Rajendra Pawar, a 32-year-old rider from Khadki, and his 28-year-old female companion, who is employed at a private company. According to a press release issued on Sunday, Police Havaldar Supriya Borhade, from the Chinchwad traffic division, filed the initial information report (FIR) regarding this matter at the Chinchwad police station.
Authorities reported that a motorcycle owned by one of the suspects was removed from a no-parking zone and placed into a tempo while traffic police were on duty at approximately 12:15 PM.
The situation deteriorated when the couple allegedly engaged in a heated argument with her, which escalated into a physical altercation. During this confrontation, they reportedly assaulted the officer and took her mobile phone, likely to hinder her from documenting the incident or reaching out to her superiors.
The officer promptly lodged a formal complaint, leading local police to file a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code concerning the assault of a public servant and obstruction of official duties. The couple is currently under investigation, with law enforcement vowing to take stringent action against them.
This incident has raised significant concerns regarding the safety of traffic police officers, particularly women, who frequently encounter hostility while performing their duties.
The couple in question has been apprehended by law enforcement on allegations of disrupting government operations and assaulting a public servant while on duty. These charges fall under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), specifically sections 132, 121 (1), 218, 221, 324, 352, and 3(5). Assistant Police Inspector Vitthal Karambalkar, who is overseeing the investigation, confirmed that the court has ordered the accused to be held in police custody for a duration of two days.
