Traffic Violations in PCMC: Over ₹3 Crores in Fines Collected Through CCTV Monitoring
Enhanced surveillance and swift enforcement aim to curb reckless driving in Pimpri-Chinchwad.
Vehicle owners in Pimpri-Chinchwad need to be cautious as traffic violations are now being strictly monitored through an extensive CCTV network. Since November 2022, traffic police have penalized 41,695 violators using CCTV footage, collecting fines amounting to ₹3.04 crore.
Following the bomb blast on Pune’s Jangli Maharaj Road in August 2012, the state government decided to install 1,408 CCTV cameras in Pune Police Commissionerate’s jurisdiction. As part of this initiative, approximately 250 cameras were installed at key intersections in Pimpri-Chinchwad. Initially, traffic rule enforcement using CCTV footage began under the Pune police.
After Pimpri-Chinchwad became a separate police commissionerate on August 15, 2018, enforcement using CCTV footage slowed due to the lack of dedicated monitoring systems. However, under the Smart City Project, 3,500 CCTV cameras were installed across the city, with their integration completed by August 2022. Since then, the Smart City office in Nigdi has resumed strict monitoring and enforcement against traffic violations.
Key Actions
The majority of CCTV cameras under the Smart City initiative are now operational, enabling the police to efficiently track violations such as:
• Vehicles stopping on zebra crossings.
• Triple-seat riders on two-wheelers.
• Four-wheeler drivers not wearing seat belts.
• Vehicles entering no-entry zones.
• Signal jumping.
Impact
This enhanced monitoring system has significantly increased the pace of action against violators, ensuring stricter enforcement of traffic rules. The initiative aims to instill discipline among drivers, reducing the number of violations and ensuring safer roads in the future.
