Telecom regulator targets unregistered telemarketers to reduce spam calls, issues stringent new rules for telecom providers.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has launched a major crackdown on spam callers, leading to the disconnection of 2.75 lakh mobile numbers and the blacklisting of 50 companies. This action is part of TRAI’s ongoing efforts to combat the surge in spam calls from unregistered telemarketers, which have generated over 7.9 lakh complaints in the first half of 2024 alone.

In a statement released on September 3, TRAI emphasized that telecom access providers have taken strict measures to tackle the misuse of telecom resources for spamming. “Access Providers have blacklisted more than 50 entities and disconnected over 2.75 lakh SIP DID/Mobile Numbers/Telecom resources,” TRAI stated.

The move comes after TRAI observed a significant increase in spam calls, particularly from unregistered telemarketers (UTMs). In response to the rise in complaints, the regulator issued directives on August 13, mandating telecom providers to immediately halt promotional calls originating from unregistered telemarketers using SIP, PRI, or other telecom resources.

TRAI has warned that any UTM found misusing telecom resources will face serious consequences, including a potential two-year disconnection of all telecom services and permanent blacklisting. These actions are part of a broader effort to ensure compliance and protect consumers from the ongoing nuisance of spam calls.

In addition to the recent crackdown, TRAI also released a consultation paper on August 28 proposing further amendments to anti-spam regulations. One of the proposed changes includes implementing tariffs for phone calls and text messages that exceed a specific daily limit when sent from ten-digit mobile numbers.

TRAI hopes these measures will curb the rise in unsolicited communications and ensure a more efficient and user-friendly telecom environment for consumers across India.
