In a bold move, Donald Trump nominates long-time loyalist Kash Patel as the next FBI Director, signaling a major shake-up in the federal agency.

US President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Kashyap ‘Kash’ Patel, an Indian-American former aide and a staunch ally, as the new Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). If confirmed, Patel would replace Christopher Wray, the current FBI director, who has faced criticism from Trump due to the agency’s involvement in investigations related to the president-elect’s handling of classified records.

Patel, who served as Chief of Staff at the Department of Defense and Deputy Director of National Intelligence during Trump’s first term, has been an outspoken critic of government institutions, including the FBI. His past proposals have included limiting the FBI’s power and calling for the removal of its senior leadership. In his memoir, Government Gangsters, Patel argued for dismantling what he referred to as “government tyranny” within the agency.

Trump praised Patel as a “brilliant lawyer, investigator, and ‘America First’ fighter,” emphasizing his role in uncovering what he described as the “Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax” and his advocacy for truth and accountability. “Kash has spent his career exposing corruption, defending justice, and protecting the American people,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Patel’s appointment would mark him as the second Indian-American in Trump’s cabinet. As a former defense lawyer and federal prosecutor, Patel gained prominence in 2017 when he became senior counsel to the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee. His strong support for Trump and criticism of the FBI’s actions have made him a polarizing figure. Notably, Patel is a vocal critic of the “deep state,” the conspiracy theory that alleges unelected bureaucrats secretly control the government.

In a related move, Trump also announced his nomination of Chad Chronister, the sheriff of Hillsborough County, Florida, as head of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Other appointments include Pam Bondi as Attorney General and Charles Kushner as ambassador to France, a post that marks the first formal position Trump has offered to a relative since his re-election.

Patel’s nomination will need approval from the US Senate, where it remains to be seen how his controversial stance on the FBI and government institutions will impact his confirmation.

Patel’s career has been marked by his allegiance to Trump, which includes serving on the board of Trump Media and Technology Group, the parent company of Truth Social, where he reportedly earned over $120,000 annually. His children’s books, including The Plot Against the King, reflect his pro-Trump stance, with characters and plots often targeting Trump’s critics.

The potential appointment of Patel as FBI Director signals a continuation of Trump’s efforts to reshape government agencies and align them with his political priorities, promising a tense confirmation process as political divides deepen over his choices for key positions.
