After being convicted in a cheque bounce case, the accused and his counsel allegedly abused and threatened the presiding judge in open court.

A Delhi courtroom witnessed an alarming episode when a convict and his lawyer hurled threats and abuses at a woman judge following her verdict in a cheque bounce case.

The judge, identified as Judge Mangla, noted in her order dated April 2 that the accused not only shouted expletives at her in open court but also attempted to hurl an object at her. In a shocking outburst, he reportedly said, “Tu hai kya cheez… tu bahar mil, dekhte hai kaise zinda ghar jaati hai” (“Who even are you… meet me outside and let’s see how you make it back home alive”).

According to the court order, after the verdict, the accused and his lawyer, Advocate Atul Kumar, began harassing the judge both mentally and physically, allegedly pressuring her to resign and overturn the judgment. They also threatened to file false complaints to intimidate her.

Despite the ordeal, Judge Mangla affirmed her commitment to justice. “Still the undersigned stands against all the odds and always does the needful in favor of justice,” she stated, adding that she will take the matter to the National Commission for Women (NCW) for the threats and harassment.

Additionally, the court issued a show cause notice to Advocate Atul Kumar, asking him to explain in writing why criminal contempt proceedings should not be initiated against him. His reply has been sought at the next hearing.

This case raises serious concerns about the safety of judicial officers and the increasing trend of intimidation tactics being used inside courtrooms. The judge’s response underscores the resilience of the judiciary in the face of such unlawful pressure.
