Tumbbad sequel announced amidst re-release success
Actor Sohum Shah has announced that a sequel to the acclaimed film Tumbbad is officially in the works. The news comes as the film enjoys renewed success following its re-release in theaters.
In a recent interview, Shah highlighted how Tumbbad differs from other folklore-based horror films like Stree and Munjya. He stated, “I don’t think that is a problem. Those films are different. None of them are like Tumbbad. There’s a lot of difference in these stories. They are not making dadi-nani ki kahaniyaan (tales shared by our grandmothers). Our story is not based in modern times. Our film begins and ends in the period time. We have a rakshas, a demon. They are not dealing with such elements.”
Shah also spoke about the sequel, revealing that the success and support for Tumbbad make it easier to proceed with Tumbbad 2. He mentioned, “We are still in the pre-production process and locking the script. Once that is done, we will look out for the right kind of backing.”
The original Tumbbad, directed by Rahi Anil Barve, follows the story of a man’s quest for a hidden 20th-century treasure in the Indian village of Tumbbad. It was lauded for its gripping narrative and strong performances. In comparison, *Stree 2*, a sequel to the 2018 hit Stree, and Munjya, featuring Sharvari, Abhay Verma, and Mona Singh, are part of the same horror comedy universe but differ significantly in style and storytelling from Tumbbad.
