Pune: Troubled by the frequent air pollution, Kalyani Nagar residents have raised the issue of garbage burning that takes place in the space under the metro line, directly in front of Reddy’s Restaurant in Kalyani Nagar.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Monica S, a resident of Kalyani Nagar said, “I am deeply concerned about the frequent garbage burning opposite Reddy’s Restaurant, Kalyani Nagar. The smell of smoke and toxic fumes from the burning waste is unbearable. All the commuters passing by have to inhale the smoke, why should they suffer? Despite several complaints, the situation remains unchanged. We need immediate action to stop the burning of garbage and implement effective waste management systems. It’s everyone’s right to live in a clean and healthy environment, and I urge the authorities to take this matter seriously.”

Aaditya Patil, another resident of Kalyani Nagar said, “I urgently bring to your attention the chronic issue of garbage burning at South Avenue, opposite Reddy’s Restaurant, inside the road divider under the metro line. Residents are distressed as this hazardous practice occurs regularly during mornings and evenings, jeopardizing Pune’s air quality. We fear our city is mirroring Delhi’s pollution woes. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is plummeting, posing severe health risks. Morning walkers, once breathing fresh air, now face a challenge. With the JN.1 Covid variant, the stakes are higher. Authorities must take strict action immediately to curb this menace and preserve Pune’s well-being.”

Pradipkumar Raut, PMC Health Inspector said, “Garbage burning was going on by 2 people opposite Reddy’s Restaurant. They have been fined Rs 500 each. We are ensuring that such incidents don’t happen in the future.”
