Disruption takes place hours after Lok Sabha pays tribute to 2001 Parliament attack victims

December 13, 2023

On December 13 (Wednesday), two people carrying what appeared to be gas canisters leaped into the House from the public gallery, causing shocking scenes that the Lok Sabha (LS) had to witness.

As per further information, the pair entered the House during Zero Hour, with one of them leaping over the benches and the other dangled over the public gallery, spraying something that looked like gas. Inside the House, this caused disarray and confusion.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a Congress MP, claimed that the two individuals were carrying tear gas canisters. This is a serious breach of security.

Danish Ali, a BSP MP, made a demand to find out how the two entered the building and who gave them the pass recommendation.

Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant stated that one of them was caught by the MPs while the other went around jumping on the benches. In order to remove the gas canister that released yellow smoke, he opened his shoes.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said that the Lok Sabha is looking into the incident that occurred during Zero Hour, and Delhi Police has been given the necessary instructions in relation to it. Nevertheless, the initial concern—the smoke—has been determined, through preliminary investigation, that it’s not a matter of worry/concern.

Om Birla called a meeting of MPs from all parties later in the day to address their concerns regarding the security lapse in the House, saying it is being thoroughly investigated.

Om Birla further said that four people had been taken into custody in relation to the incident: two from inside the House and two from outside Parliament.

He further said that the Delhi Police has also been ordered to conduct an investigation by the Lok Sabha. He added that it appeared as though the smoke emitted by the intruders was sprayed to create sensationalism and that it looked harmless in the first investigation. Later in the day, he convened a meeting of MPs and promised to address all of their concerns.
