Uber Starts Shikara Rides on Kashmir's Dal Lake, First Water Service in Asia
In a first for India, Uber has launched a water transport service in Srinagar, allowing users to book shikara rides via its app. Named *Uber Shikara*, the service debuts in Asia and mirrors similar offerings in European cities like Venice.
The service was unveiled on Dal Lake, one of Jammu and Kashmir’s top tourist destinations. Known as the “Jewel of Srinagar,” Dal Lake is famed for its scenic beauty and cultural significance. The shikara, a wooden boat symbolic of Kashmir’s heritage, is widely used by tourists for leisurely rides.
In its initial phase, Uber has onboarded seven shikaras, with plans to expand based on demand. The rides operate from Shikara Ghat No. 16, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., accommodating up to four passengers. Bookings can be made 12 hours to 15 days in advance.
Uber’s spokesperson said the company is not charging commission fees, ensuring full fare payments go directly to shikara operators. This app-based service aims to standardize pricing, reduce bargaining, and provide steady income to boatmen.
Manoj Sinha, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, praised the initiative for blending technology with tradition. The Shikara Owners Association, representing around 4,000 boats, welcomed the move. Its president, Wali Mohammad Bhatt, expressed optimism about the platform’s potential to onboard more shikaras and boost tourism.
Uber Shikara offers an easy, tech-driven way for travelers to enjoy the serene beauty of Dal Lake. “It’s a seamless experience that enhances accessibility while uplifting local tourism,” Uber stated.
This new service combines tradition and modernity, providing a unique experience in the heart of Kashmir.
