After a year filled with traffic woes and growing frustration among Punekars, the approaching year of 2026 is bringing with it a sense of cautious hope. One of Pune’s most crucial infrastructure projects, the University Road flyover, is expected to become fully operational by January 15, 2026, marking a major milestone for commuters travelling between Aundh and Shivajinagar, one of the city’s busiest education and office corridors.

The impact of the project is already being felt. A partial stretch of the flyover, connecting Aundh to Shivajinagar, has been open to traffic since August, and commuters have noticed visible improvements during peak hours. Traffic movement has become smoother, and several junctions that earlier experienced daily congestion are now witnessing fewer bottlenecks, easing the pressure on this heavily used road.

University Road has long served as a vital link between western Pune and the city’s central areas, carrying thousands of students, office-goers, and emergency vehicles every day. With the flyover nearing completion, traffic flow across this high-density corridor is expected to improve significantly, reducing delays that were once considered unavoidable.

Public transport is also expected to benefit from the upgraded corridor. PMPML buses operating on University Road have often struggled to maintain schedules due to signal delays and congestion. Officials believe that the flyover’s smoother traffic movement will allow buses to run more reliably, improving commuting options for daily passengers.

Designed to bypass some of the city’s most crowded intersections, the elevated corridor allows vehicles to move above traffic signals and choke points. This has already helped reduce waiting times at key junctions, especially during the morning and evening rush hours, when traffic movement earlier slowed to a crawl.

With construction now entering its final phase, the remaining work includes finishing touches, safety inspections, and alignment adjustments. Civic officials have stated that the pace of work has picked up to ensure that the entire flyover opens as scheduled by mid-January 2026.

Another noticeable change has been the reduced spillover of traffic into nearby residential areas. Earlier, congestion on University Road forced vehicles into smaller internal lanes, causing noise and disruption for residents. Since the flyover began absorbing through traffic, locals have reported quieter streets and fewer traffic-related disturbances.

Authorities estimate that the improved traffic flow will significantly cut down travel time along the corridor. Reduced idling at traffic signals is also expected to lower fuel consumption, offering both economic and environmental benefits for daily commuters.

Urban planners are viewing the University Road flyover as a possible model for future infrastructure projects in dense city areas. Its phased opening allowed traffic to be managed more efficiently during construction, a strategy that could be adopted for similar projects across Pune.

Despite the challenges faced by the city in 2025, several infrastructure upgrades are expected to bring relief in the coming year. Among them is the University Square (Savitribai Phule Pune University Chowk) Flyover, which the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has said is targeted for completion in 2026. Once open, it is expected to ease congestion for commuters travelling towards Shivajinagar, Aundh, Baner, Pashan, and surrounding areas.
