UPI New Rules 2026: NPCI 90-Day Inactive Number Rule Explained
NPCI introduces new UPI rules from April 1, 2026. Learn how inactive mobile numbers can deactivate your UPI services and how to keep your account active.

April 1, 2026: In a major update aimed at enhancing digital payment security, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has implemented a crucial new rule for UPI users starting today. The move could impact millions of users relying on popular platforms like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm.

Under the new regulation, UPI services linked to mobile numbers that remain inactive for more than 90 days may be permanently deactivated, potentially disrupting digital transactions if users fail to take timely action.

What is the 90-Day Rule?

As per NPCI’s latest guidelines, if a registered mobile number linked to a bank account and UPI ID remains inactive for over 90 days, all associated UPI services will be disabled. This means users will not be able to send or receive money through UPI apps.

Why Has This Rule Been Introduced?

The decision comes in response to rising concerns over financial fraud. Often, users discontinue a mobile number without unlinking it from their bank accounts. Telecom providers may later reassign the same number to a new user.

In such cases, if the old number is still linked to an active UPI account, there is a risk that the new user could misuse it to access financial services. The new rule aims to eliminate this vulnerability and strengthen user security.

Who Will Be Affected?

  • Users who have not recharged or used their registered mobile number for an extended period
  • Individuals whose bank accounts are still linked to old or discontinued numbers
  • Users who have not accessed their UPI apps for several months

How to Keep Your UPI Active

To avoid disruption, users are advised to follow these key steps:

1. Keep Your Mobile Number Active
Ensure that the number linked to your bank account is regularly recharged and in use.

2. Update Your Number with the Bank
If you have changed or discontinued your old number, visit your bank immediately and update your new active number.

3. Monitor App Notifications
Going forward, explicit user consent will be required for linking mobile numbers to UPI IDs. Pay close attention to alerts from your payment apps.

Stronger Monitoring by Banks and Apps

NPCI has also directed banks and payment platforms to update records of inactive numbers on a weekly basis. This will make the system more responsive and reduce the chances of fraud.

A Step Towards Safer Digital Payments

With digital transactions becoming an integral part of daily life, this new rule is designed not to inconvenience users but to safeguard their money. Experts advise users to verify their mobile number status immediately to avoid any interruption in UPI services.

Bottom Line:
If you use UPI regularly, ensure your registered mobile number is active and updated—failing to do so could result in sudden service disruption.
