In 2023, Vada Pav made headlines by clinching the 13th spot in the ‘Best Sandwiches in the World’ list on Taste Atlas. However, this year, its position has dipped to number 19. Taste Atlas annually releases rankings for various culinary delights, including dishes, cuisines, cheeses, food cities, and legendary restaurants worldwide.

Vada Pav is a popular street food that has earned a commendable rating of 4.3 out of 5 on the Taste Atlas website. The dish traces its origins to a vendor named Ashok Vaidya, who used to sell it near Dadar train station in the 1960s and 1970s. It gained immense popularity when the Shiv Sena party endorsed it as an ideal snack for the working class.

While India secured the 11th position for best cuisines globally, some regional delicacies earned recognition in other categories. Hyderabadi Biryani claimed the 29th spot for best rice dishes, while Rasmalai secured the second position in the best cheese dessert category. Achappam also made its mark, ranking 39th in the best doughnuts list.

The Taste Atlas project meticulously catalogues and promotes local ingredients, traditional recipes, and authentic eateries. Rankings are determined by votes from visitors throughout the year, with the top-ranking dishes boasting the best average ratings.

Despite controversies surrounding alleged rigging and transparency issues, project founder Matija Babić defended the methodology, emphasizing their system’s ability to differentiate genuine votes from invalid ones. The project aims to celebrate diverse cuisines and culinary traditions from around the globe, ensuring that the essence of each dish is preserved and promoted.
