Vaibhav Suryavanshi Shatters Virat Kohli’s Youth ODI Record, Creates History At 14
Young batting sensation becomes India’s highest run-getter in Youth ODIs, surpassing Kohli with a blazing fifty in the Under-19 World Cup clash against Bangladesh.
Indian cricket witnessed a historic moment when 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi broke Virat Kohli’s long-standing record to become the highest run-scorer for India in Youth ODIs. The milestone came during India’s Under-19 World Cup match against Bangladesh, where Vaibhav played a fearless knock and reached his half-century in just 30 balls.
With this performance, Vaibhav crossed the 1,000-run mark in Youth ODIs, a feat he achieved in only 20 innings. In comparison, Virat Kohli had scored 978 runs in 25 innings during his youth ODI career. Vaibhav now leads the list with 1,047 runs, rewriting Indian cricket’s junior history at an age when most players are still in school-level tournaments.
What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the speed and consistency with which Vaibhav has reached this landmark. He already has three centuries and five half-centuries in Youth ODIs, overtaking Kohli not just in total runs but also in the number of hundreds at this level. His ability to dominate bowlers with maturity beyond his years has drawn attention from cricket fans and experts alike.
In the match against Bangladesh, India found themselves under early pressure after losing captain Ayush Mhatre for just six runs and Vedant Trivedi on the very next ball. With two quick wickets, the innings was wobbling. Vaibhav, however, stepped in with calm authority and stitched a crucial partnership with Abhigyan Kundu. The duo took India past the 100-run mark and stabilized the innings.
Vaibhav eventually scored 72 runs off 67 balls, combining aggression with composure. His innings not only rescued India from early trouble but also became the platform for his record-breaking achievement.
Vaibhav’s rise has been nothing short of extraordinary. Over the past year, he has been dominating age-group cricket across formats. In Youth T20s, he has scored 701 runs in 18 matches at a stunning strike rate of over 200. In List A cricket, he has already amassed 353 runs in eight matches. He has also made his first-class debut, scoring 207 runs in eight games, showing his adaptability to longer formats.
Despite his tender age, Vaibhav’s confidence at the crease is striking. His stroke selection, fearless intent, and ability to counter pressure situations suggest a player with rare temperament and technical clarity. Breaking a record held by Virat Kohli, one of India’s greatest modern-day batsmen, places him in an elite bracket of young Indian talents.
The Under-19 World Cup has already begun on a positive note for India. The team started its campaign with a six-wicket win against the United States, where Vaibhav again showed aggressive intent, though he fell while attempting a big shot. His approach reflects a fearless mindset that defines modern cricket.
Cricket history is filled with prodigies who shone early, but only a few manage to convert promise into longevity. Vaibhav Suryavanshi has taken a giant step by breaking Kohli’s youth record, but the journey ahead will demand discipline, patience, and consistency.
For now, Indian cricket has a new teenage star, and his name is already being spoken in the same breath as legends.
