Football fever took over Mumbai as Argentina’s legendary captain Lionel Messi arrived in the city, drawing massive crowds at Wankhede Stadium eager for a glimpse of the football superstar. The excitement reached new heights when Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis officially inaugurated Project Mahadeva, a visionary initiative aimed at nurturing the next generation of football talent in Maharashtra.
What is Project Mahadeva?
Project Mahadeva has been designed to identify and train promising young footballers in the state. As part of the launch event, 60 talented players under the age of 13—chosen through rigorous district-level trials—received an exclusive 45-minute training and mentoring session with Messi himself. For these budding athletes, interacting with one of the greatest footballers of all time was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The event also witnessed the presence of iconic sports personalities, including cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri, former national team captain Rahil Bhake, and several prominent celebrities.
Addressing Messi during the ceremony, CM Fadnavis said, “Hello Mumbai, Ganpati Bappa Morya! It is a privilege to welcome the greatest football player in the world. Today, you are mentoring 60 young footballers who we hope will shine on the field by 2034. Project Mahadeva aims to make football the heartbeat of our state. Thank you for inspiring and guiding these young talents. I am confident that one of them will represent India at the FIFA World Cup.”

Long-Term Vision of Project Mahadeva
Project Mahadeva is an integral part of Mission Olympic 2026, with a long-term goal of nurturing players to achieve global football excellence. The initiative aims to position Maharashtra as a hub for football talent, providing structured training for players aged 13 to 18. Through disciplined guidance, world-class coaching, and exposure to international opportunities, the project intends to prepare athletes to compete at the highest levels, with the ultimate goal of seeing an Indian player on the FIFA World Cup stage by 2034.
The initiative is a joint effort between the Maharashtra Institution for Transformation (MITRA), Village Social Transformation Foundation (VSTF), Western India Football Association (WIFA), CIDCO, and the Sports Department of the Maharashtra Government. By combining expertise in administration, grassroots development, professional training, and infrastructure, the project seeks to create a robust and sustainable ecosystem for football in Maharashtra, ensuring that the state produces world-class talent for years to come.
Messi’s visit has not only brought immense excitement to football fans in India but also highlighted Maharashtra’s commitment to building a strong football culture. Project Mahadeva promises to inspire young players, provide them with unparalleled opportunities, and place the state firmly on the global football map.
