Ahmedabad tragedy: Students escape burning hostel using bedsheets and grills as AI171 crashes into BJ Medical College building

Terrifying videos have surfaced online showing the dramatic escape of students from the BJ Medical College hostel in Ahmedabad after Air India flight AI171 crashed into their building. The aircraft, a Dreamliner, had just taken off from runway 23 at Ahmedabad Airport when it veered off course and smashed into the hostel moments later.

In the heart-wrenching visuals now going viral, students are seen using bedsheets and clothing as makeshift ropes to climb down to lower balconies, with one person holding the ends to assist their descent. From there, they clung to balcony grills before leaping to safety, all while flames rapidly engulfed the lower floors of the hostel.

Eyewitnesses and survivors recounted the sheer panic and chaos in the aftermath of the explosion. “We heard a loud noise and explosion,” one survivor told media outlets. Several students had no choice but to jump from significant heights, risking severe injury to avoid the spreading fire.

One student fractured his foot in the desperate attempt to escape, while another shared that the blaze had become so intense it was “impossible” to exit through the front door. His only option: to jump from his balcony.

The scenes have drawn widespread attention and triggered fresh questions about building safety protocols near critical zones like airports.
