Vishrambaug Police files FIR against Awhad over controversial remarks
Leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Jitendra Awhad, was booked by the Vishrambaug Police on Friday for his divisive comments about Lord Ram made during a rally in Shirdi.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) city unit president, Dheeraj Ghate, filed the complaint, which led to the FIR being filed against the NCP leader.
Under section 295 A of the Indian Penal Code, which prohibits ‘deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs,’ Pune police have filed a case at the Vishrambaug Police Station.
Dheeraj Ghate said that on Thursday, they submitted a written complaint to the Vishrambaug Police station.
In response, Jitendra Awhad was booked by Vishrambaug Police over his contentious remarks regarding Lord Ram. On Wednesday, the NCP MLA asserted that, “Lord Ram was a non-vegetarian and a member of the Bahujan Community. He went on to say that how could Lord Ram stay a vegetarian after spending 14 years in the forest?”
The day following his contentious comments, Awhad apologized, saying he had proof to back up his assertions and that he hadn’t made the statement without the necessary information. In response, the BJP denounced Awhad for his controversial comments and called for his arrest.
