Residents of Wakad complain about multiple projects through the 1.5 km stretch from Dange Chowk to Jagtap dairy causing traffic congestion, making it inconvenient for commuters. The residents are demanding a permanent solution and are unhappy about the subway at Kaverinagar, Wakad. Residents had also written to Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner but haven’t received any response.

“No one from PCMC is concerned about the matter. We have complained about this issue many times but yet we have not got any permanent solution or even attention on the matter. And now as PCMC has an administration it is more difficult to get a solution because there are so many problems in the city which needs attention. Yet we will be writing to the Commissioner again,” said Dattatray Deshmukh, chairman of Pimpri-Chinchwad Co-operative Housing Societies Federation Ltd.

Explaining the situation, Abijit Garad, a resident of Wakad said that nine projects were happening on that 1.5 km stretch. “Work is on for 3 flyovers, 3 grade separators and 3 subways. The subway at KaveriNagar is only adding to the trouble. We need a permanent solution to this problem,” he said.

Pramod Ombhase, Joint City Engineer at PCMC said, “The reason to construct the subway is to reduce the traffic congestion but few people go the wrong way and the street vendors stand there. People also park their vehicles on the side to buy items from these handcarts therefore, the traffic congestion increases.”

Baba Gaikwad, Deputy Engineer of PCMC’s traffic cell attributes the traffic congestion mainly to the haphazardly parked vehicles on the roads.

My office which is 300 metre from my home, still during busy hours it takes more that 25 minutes to travel. We want permanent solution on traffic jam as there is huge traffic at Kaverinagar and Kalewadi Phata. The height of subway at Kaverinagar is short, the vehicles from both side come here and the other reason is unauthorised street vendors,” said Nitin Chaudhary, resident of Wakad.

Another resident of Wakad, Shubhash Kothari said, “We are facing this traffic problem daily to cover small distance it takes more than 25 minutes and now this has become a daily affair. Earlier we had complained about this to Opposition party leader Ajit Pawar but yet there has been no solution provided.”
