Late Vilasrao Deshmukh Sports Complex was completed in the year 2017 but since then it was never opened for use. In March 2020, when the Covid19 marked its entry into the city, the sports complex was turned into a Covid19 testing centre. After the Covid cases declined, the civic body opened the bid and has now given it on contract to a third-party agency to run it. The sports complex will now have a badminton and Karate academy.

Speaking about the issue, Sanjay Warule of sports cell, Pune Municipal Corporation said, “After years of being closed, the sports complex now stands open for the residents. People can now avail the facilities offered by the third party agency which is operating the sports complex. The Covid-19 testing facility which was opened at the complex has now been shut permanently. “

When Pune Pulse spoke to Abhijeet Shivarkar, former corporator, he said, “Finally the wait is over. The sports complex is Wanowrie’s pride. It took more than 5 years for the complex to be put to use. The real purpose of the complex will now be achieved. It was built in my tenure of 2012 -17 and I have been hoping that it would be used since then but sadly that did not happen. After knowing now that the complex will serve its purpose, I am happy.”
