Water cut scare looms over city, decision to be made tomorrow

Khadakwasla dam project, which supplies water to Pune city, had 16.19 TMC or 55.55 percent of water storage left on Thursday. Due to this, the Water Resources Department is facing a challenge to meet the drinking water requirements till the month of June along with irrigation in rural areas including Pune city.
Therefore, a decision is expected in the meeting to be held on Saturday (February 24) under the chairmanship of Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar.
In the Khadakwasla dam project, four dams namely Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon, Temghar have less water storage this year as compared to last year. The dwindling water reserves, the danger of water cut is on the people of Pune. At that time they will take a decision after seeing the water condition in February. Until then, using water sparingly is what is being appealed to the citizens. Accordingly, it has been claimed that the municipal administration along with the water resources department has started implementing water saving measures.
Khadakwasla project has a water reserve of 16.19 TMC. Last year, around 7.8 TMC of water was given to the Pune Municipal Corporation during the summer season from March to the end of July 15. drinking water to urban and rural areas of the district; Also, giving water for agriculture without any reduction is going to be a challenge.
The Water Resources Department has claimed to have saved 0.5 TMC of water while providing irrigation to agriculture during the Rabi season. Earlier in Pune district, drought has been declared in Purandar, Baramati, Daund, Indapur and Shirur talukas. Now 16 villages of Khed, Junnar, Ambegaon talukas have also been declared drought-affected.
