Pune/Mumbai, June 19, 2025
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Pune district and Orange Alerts for Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and parts of the Western Ghats, warning of extremely heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours. The alert comes as parts of Maharashtra have been experiencing intense rain for the past two days.

According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rain is likely in Pune, Mumbai, and the Konkan and Ghats region, especially in areas like Satara and Nashik. Pune experienced torrential downpours on Wednesday night, leading to waterlogging in several parts of the city and disrupting traffic. In some low-lying areas, water reportedly entered homes.

The IMD has warned that coastal districts including Thane, Mumbai Suburban, Mumbai City, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg may witness high sea waves between 3.5 to 3.8 meters from Wednesday evening (5:30 PM) until 11:30 PM on June 19. Authorities have urged residents in coastal and low-lying areas to remain vigilant.

In Raigad, continuous rainfall has caused river levels to rise. The Amba River crossed its danger mark, and traffic on the Khopoli-Wakan stretch has come to a halt. The Kundalika River has also breached warning levels, and floodwaters from the Amba River have reached roadways. Police have diverted traffic along affected routes.

With the monsoon now active across the entire state, the weather department predicts widespread rain in the coming days. Konkan and Western Ghats are likely to see heavy showers on Thursday, while Marathwada and Vidarbha are expected to experience thunderstorms and lightning along with rain.

Authorities across Maharashtra are on high alert and have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors where possible, and follow safety instructions issued by local administrations.
