Pune | April 16, 2025 Most areas in Pune experienced scorching conditions on Tuesday, with temperatures crossing the 40°C mark, indicating the onset of heatwave-like weather, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Shivajinagar reported a high of 40.8°C, while Lohegaon registered the highest at 42.7°C—making it the hottest spot in the city this season. Koregaon Park and Pashan followed closely, recording 40.5°C, Baramati saw 40.3°C, and Magarpatta reached 40.2°C.

Weather experts note that Lohegaon, home to an Air Force station and marked by rapid urban development and dense traffic, often records elevated temperatures compared to other locations like Shivajinagar and Pashan. Historically, its automated weather station (AWS) consistently captures higher readings due to localized urban heat effects.

Earlier this month, a brief respite had come in the form of cloudy skies and scattered rainfall, which temporarily brought down the mercury. However, with the recent clear skies and dry weather, temperatures are once again climbing.

Dr. Anupam Kashyapi, former head of the IMD’s weather forecasting division, stated that heatwave conditions are expected to intensify across parts of northwest Maharashtra, along with regions of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. He added that the likelihood of rain in the near future has diminished significantly.

As per IMD guidelines, a heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature exceeds 40°C and is 4.5°C to 6.4°C above the normal average. Prolonged exposure to such intense heat can be dangerous for both people and animals.

Authorities are urging residents to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and remain well-hydrated to prevent heat-related illnesses.
