The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall from September 1 to 3. Pune city is expected to see light to moderate rainfall during this period. IMD scientist explained that the increased rainfall is due to a well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify into a depression within the next 36 hours. As of August 30, the system was located over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, off the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.

The IMD’s forecast indicates fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall over western and central India for the upcoming week. In Maharashtra, isolated heavy rainfall is likely in Vidarbha on September 1 and 2, while Madhya Maharashtra may experience isolated heavy rainfall from September 3 to 5. Marathwada is also expected to receive isolated heavy rainfall from September 1 to 3.

He noted that when a system moves west-northwestward from the Bay of Bengal, it usually brings active monsoon conditions to parts of Maharashtra. However, the Cyclonic Storm “ASNA,” which is moving away from the Indian coast, is unlikely to affect the upcoming rainfall.

Data from the IMD showed a reduction in rainfall in Pune as of August 30. Lonavla recorded 28.5 mm, Shivajinagar 5.6 mm, and Bhor 5.5 mm. Other areas saw light rainfall with Lavale receiving 4 mm, Pashan 2.4 mm, and Koregaon Park and Girivan 2 mm each.
