Pune: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Pune city and its surrounding areas due to the possibility of thundery activity and lightning.

The alert comes as a low pressure area has formed over East Vidarbha and is passing through Marathwada, resulting in cloudy weather and a likelihood of rain with hail in some places.

The impact-based advisories provided by the meteorological department include precautions to avoid heat exhaustion and dehydration by avoiding stepping out in the afternoons, and removing plant pots from windows/balcony railings during gusty winds to prevent injuries.

Taking shelter under trees during thundery activity is also strongly advised against. Additionally, the use of mobile phones and electronic appliances should be avoided during periods of lightning, and windows and doors should be kept closed during strong winds.

Travel during times of strong wind and lightning should be avoided, and drivers should exercise caution due to reduced visibility and slippery roads caused by rain spells.

The cloud cover is expected to increase over the state and district, and people are urged to check for updates from the meteorological department regularly.

The districts that have been issued an orange alert include Ratnagiri, Dakhne, Nashik, Nandurbar, Ahmednagar, Solapur, Sindhudurg, Pune, and Kolhapur, indicating the need for heightened caution during the weather events.
