Pune, May 9, 2025 – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a multi-day weather alert predicting widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning across various parts of the country, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, and the Northeast, over the next few days. The forecast also warns of a fresh spell of heat wave likely to grip parts of East India starting May 10.

Key Highlights:

  • Maharashtra Weather Forecast: Thunderstorms with lightning are expected to persist in isolated areas of Maharashtra, including Pune and Mumbai, for the next 4–5 days. Moisture from high daytime temperatures is likely to trigger cumulonimbus cloud formation, leading to afternoon and evening showers. While the rains are beneficial for summer crops, lightning poses significant safety risks. Citizens are advised to stay alert and avoid open areas during thunderstorms.
  • Northwest & Central India: Scattered to widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40–60 kmph) are likely over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan from May 8–11. Isolated dust storms are forecast for West Rajasthan on May 9 and 10.
  • West India: Thunderstorm activity accompanied by gusty winds (50–60 kmph) is expected across Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Gujarat on May 8. Light to moderate rainfall will continue till May 12 in these regions.
  • East & Central India: From May 8–12, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh will experience thunderstorms with gusty winds up to 60 kmph. Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha will also receive similar weather conditions, particularly on May 8.
  • South Peninsular India: Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and winds up to 50 kmph is forecast across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala through May 12.
  • Northeast India: Widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is expected from May 9–14. Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall on May 11 and 12, with Mizoram affected on May 12.

Heat Wave Alert:

  • A heat wave is set to begin in East India from May 10, affecting Gangetic West Bengal (May 10–13), Odisha (May 10–14), Bihar (May 11–13), and Jharkhand (May 11–14). In addition, hot and humid conditions are expected over parts of West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry on May 8 and 9.

  • Stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to heat during the upcoming heat wave.
