Weather Update: Orange Alert Issued for Pune; Heavy Rainfall Expected Across Maharashtra
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Pune, Satara, Amravati, Bhandara, Chandrapur, and Gondia districts. This alert, effective for Saturday, indicates heavy rainfall exceeding 64.5 mm in 24 hours, which could disrupt daily life and lead to flooding in low-lying areas.
Mumbai and other regions are also on high alert, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected from August 24 onwards. The IMD has forecasted significant rain for Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts in Konkan.
In addition, a yellow alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and light-to-moderate rainfall with gusty winds of 30-40 km/h has been issued for various districts in western Maharashtra and Marathwada.
The forecast is influenced by a low-pressure area over northern West Bengal and northeast Jharkhand, along with another system over the east-central Arabian Sea off Maharashtra’s coast, which is expected to bring rain across the state in the coming days.
