Weather Update: Pune To Witness Light Rains, Heavy Downpour In Ghats
Chetna Raja
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has extended its heavy to very heavy rainfall warning for ghat regions in Pune district till September 10. However, Pune city is expected to receive light showers over the next few days, with minimal disruption to Ganesh festival celebrations.
Currently, the temperature in Pune ranges from 22°C to 28°C, with humidity levels between 80% and 90%. Light showers are expected to continue over the next five days, with precipitation levels ranging from 1-3 mm per day.
In the ghat regions, a yellow warning has been issued for heavy rainfall. Isolated locations may receive heavy rainfall, with Lonavala recording 81mm and Shirgaon seeing 70mm in 24 hours ending 8:30 am on September 11. IMD scientist SD Sanap attributed this to a low-pressure system over the central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal, expected to intensify into a depression around September 9.
“This system will strengthen monsoon winds, leading to orographic lift on the windward side of the Western Ghats. This results in heavy rainfall in the ghat regions,” Sanap explained. However, as these winds progress towards the plains, they lose moisture content, resulting in only light rain in plain areas.
Fortunately, the light rainfall forecast for Pune city is unlikely to significantly impact Ganesh festival celebrations. The IMD will continue to monitor the situation closely and issue timely updates to the public regarding any changes in weather conditions.
Here’s a brief 5-day forecast:
- September 10: Light rain, 2-3 mm
- September 11: Light rain, 2-3 mm
- September 12: Light rain, 1-2 mm
- September 13: Light rain, 1-2 mm
- September 14: Partly cloudy, 0-1 mm
