The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Pune and several other districts in Maharashtra due to the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.
The alert is in place for the next two days, urging residents to take precautions. The IMD warns of a trough/wind discontinuity from a cyclonic circulation over Marathwada to south Tamil Nadu, increasing the likelihood of thunderstorm activity. While Pune is under a yellow alert, the intensity may exceed normal but not reach the severity of an orange alert.

Currently, the skies over Pune remain cloudy with temperatures soaring to 39°C. Moisture levels are conducive to thundercloud formation, increasing the risk of localized instability and triggering thunderstorms, especially in the evening hours.
Thunderstorm warnings have been extended to districts including Chandrapur, Kolhapur, Wardha, Yavatmal, Dhule, Jalgaon, Nashik, Satara, Sangli, and Solapur, among others.

According to IMD’s bulletin, isolated light rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning are expected over Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada until April 22. Konkan, Goa, and Vidarbha regions may also experience scattered rainfall and thunderstorms until April 21 and April 23, respectively.

As atmospheric conditions remain conducive for convective cloud development, the possibility of light to moderate spells of rain cannot be ruled out. However, widespread rainfall is unlikely.
With thunderstorm activity expected to persist, residents are urged to avoid taking shelter under trees during thunder and lightning events, and to remain cautious during the forecasted period.
