Pune: Pune, known for its recurring water scarcity issues, has received a glimmer of hope as the city’s four major dams show a significant increase in water storage. As of 6 am on July 1, the Khadakwasla dam recorded a water storage of 5.10 TMC (thousand million cubic feet), marking a rise of approximately one TMC or 3.24 per cent. This increase brings the total water storage to 17.50 per cent.

Previously, on June 27, the Khadakwasla dam chain had 4.16 TMC or 14.26 per cent water storage. The recent rise in water levels is attributed to the rainfall in the catchment areas, particularly in the dam area of Chari. Khadakwasla currently holds 1.00 TMC or 50.63 per cent of its total capacity, while Panshet and Temghar dams have useful water storage of 1.80 TMC (16.87 per cent) and 0.21 TMC (5.56 per cent), respectively. Varasgaon Dam stands at 2.10 TMC (16.37 per cent) of its total capacity.

The increased water levels have brought a sense of relief and happiness to the citizens of Pune. Over the past 24 hours, Temghar Dam received 90 mm of rainfall, while Khadakwasla, Panshet, and Varasgaon recorded 9 mm, 31 mm, and 32 mm of rainfall, respectively.

Although the rise in water levels is a positive development, Pune continues to face a water shortage crisis. The city authorities will closely monitor the situation and assess the impact of the increased water storage in the coming days.
