Popular messaging platform WhatsApp experienced a brief outage on Saturday evening, leaving several users across India unable to send messages or update statuses. According to Downdetector, the disruption began around 5:30 PM, with over 460 reports filed — 81% of them related to issues in sending messages.

Users also reported problems in uploading stories and logging into the app. However, WhatsApp has not yet issued an official statement addressing the outage.

This marks the second major disruption for WhatsApp in 2025, following a global outage on February 28, during which over 5,000 users reported message delivery issues.

With over 530 million users in India and nearly 3 billion users globally, WhatsApp outages have a significant impact on communication and productivity.

UPI Apps Also Go Down, Third Outage in 30 Days

Simultaneously, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services faced technical glitches, affecting multiple digital payment apps including Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and several bank-based UPI platforms. Downdetector recorded more than 3,000 reports from users who were unable to complete transactions.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) acknowledged the disruption in an official post on X (formerly Twitter), attributing the downtime to “intermittent technical issues, leading to partial UPI transaction declines.”

This marks the third UPI service outage in the past month, causing growing frustration among users. UPI services were previously down on April 2, disrupting payment processes for individuals and businesses alike.

Normal services for both WhatsApp and UPI apps resumed after 5 PM, but the repeated technical issues have raised concerns about digital reliability in a country rapidly moving towards a cashless and connected ecosystem.
