Jade Powell, a social media strategist, turned her LinkedIn presence into a lucrative side hustle, earning Rs 22.70 lakh within a year while pursuing her entrepreneurial dreams.

Jayde Powell, an American social media strategist, has found a surprising and profitable new venture—posting on LinkedIn. While her previous full-time job brought in a salary of $95,000 (approx. Rs 79 lakh), her LinkedIn side hustle has earned her Rs 22.70 lakh in just one year. Despite the hustle not surpassing her prior salary, Powell’s success highlights the power of social media platforms in generating alternative income.

Powell, who previously worked with major brands like Delta Airlines, began using LinkedIn differently in 2022, just as social media habits shifted away from platforms like X (formerly Twitter). Sharing her corporate experiences caught the attention of followers and former clients, leading to her first big break—a sponsored post for Sprout Social, netting her $1,000.

Realising the platform’s potential for monetisation, Powell launched her own agency, The Em Dash Co., in 2022. The LinkedIn income has since become a vital resource, helping her cover personal expenses such as her mortgage, utilities, and business overheads. Though her LinkedIn side earnings haven’t surpassed her previous full-time income, they now surpass her agency’s first-year revenue of $52,100.

Powell’s success reflects a growing trend in influencer marketing, where consumers increasingly trust recommendations from people over brands. By sharing authentic and relatable content, Powell believes, “People trust people, not brands.” This approach aligns with a 2023 survey from PR firm Matter Communications, which found that over two-thirds of US consumers prefer influencer recommendations over traditional advertising.

Though freelancing offers flexibility, Powell acknowledges the uncertainty that comes with it, citing concerns about sporadic income. Still, her future as a LinkedIn influencer looks promising, with a goal of reaching 100,000 followers by 2025 and potentially transitioning to full-time content creation.

Her journey illustrates how modern professionals can creatively leverage platforms like LinkedIn to create additional income streams and explore new career paths.
