The petition was focused on how the husband’s care for the cat allegedly led to arguments.

The Karnataka High Court has stepped in to address an unusual domestic conflict, suspending any further inquiry into a Bengaluru man who has been accused by his wife of favoring their pet cat over her.

A report from Deccan Herald indicates that the couple was involved in legal battles under IPC Section 498A, which addresses issues of cruelty and dowry harassment. Nevertheless, the court observed that the primary concern was not related to dowry or abuse, but rather a domestic disagreement arising from the husband’s affection for their pet cat.

However, the court has found the petition trivial. The judge highlighted that incidents of this nature, frequently arising from trivial domestic disagreements, put pressure on the criminal justice system by redirecting resources towards claims that are fundamentally unsubstantiated.

Justice M Nagaprasanna noted that the wife’s grievance centered on the husband’s attention to their cat, which she claimed sparked disputes, as mentioned in the DH report. The cat was said to have attacked or scratched the wife several times, contributing to the ongoing tensions.

Justice Nagaprasanna also remarked that the wife’s claims did not meet the legal standards required for a charge under IPC 498A, according to the publication.

“The complaint is a narration of marriage and living together but the crux of the allegation is foundation upon the squabble regarding a pet cat that is in the house of the husband. The allegation is that the husband takes care of the cat more than the wife. Whenever the wife has pointed out this there is a dispute between the two and abuses are hurled. That is what is narrated in most of the paragraphs of the complaint. Therefore, the issue is not about the demand for dowry or assault on demand of dowry or cruelty meted out by the husband. The issue is with regards to the pet cat and the cat attacking or scratching the wife several times,”  says the verdict.
