Work Begins on Pune Metro’s Vanaz–Chandni Chowk Extension, Boosting Connectivity in Western Corridor
Progress is finally visible on the long-awaited Metro expansion linking Vanaz to Chandni Chowk, a stretch expected to significantly improve connectivity in Pune’s western suburbs. This 1.5-kilometre elevated extension, which received approval last year, has now entered the initial stage of on-ground development.
The project will add two new stations—Kothrud Depot and Chandni Chowk—bringing Metro access closer to one of the city’s key entry points. According to Maha Metro officials, construction will be executed in phases to minimise disruption. Barricading work has already been planned in coordination with traffic police, with a focus on maintaining maximum road space for vehicles throughout the process.
An agency was recently appointed to handle the construction of both the viaduct and the stations. Alongside the Metro structure, a flyover is also planned near the Kothrud Depot area, which will be developed simultaneously. In preparation for the project, officials conducted multiple site visits over the past few months with representatives from the Pune Municipal Corporation to finalise station locations and determine entry and exit points.
Initial groundwork activities have already started around Chandni Chowk, including soil testing and surveys. Officials noted that the existing viaduct near the Vanaz depot has been slightly extended, and further construction toward Chandni Chowk will begin from this point. Plans are also underway for a foot overbridge at Chandni Chowk to ensure safe pedestrian access across the busy highway, which is considered a crucial part of the project.
Residents in nearby areas have expressed relief and optimism. Many pointed out that the absence of a direct Metro link to Chandni Chowk had been inconvenient, often requiring additional travel to reach the nearest station at Vanaz. For daily commuters, the extension is expected to simplify travel and reduce dependency on intermediate transport options.
There is also a growing demand among locals to complete the stretch as quickly as possible, given its importance in improving last-mile connectivity and easing congestion in the area.
